It began as a Mindanao-wide caravan for human rights and peace in 1999 which was dubbed as the Mindanao Day of Protest against the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). These groups who converged in Southern Christian College in Midsayap, Cotabato was formed into KASAMA KA. When President Joseph E. Estrada declared an “All Out War” against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in 2000, KASAMA KA formed the Mindanao Peace Movement as a response to the intensification of the conflict. On June 26-28, MPPM organized the 1st Mindanao Peace Summit at the Brokenshire Resource Center in Davao City and unanimously called for “Stop the War” in Mindanao. It was also in that summit that MPPM officially became the Mindanao Peoples’ Peace Movement to emphasize its tri-people (indigenous peoples, Bangsamoro and migrants) membership as well as its framework for peace. Today, MPPM celebrates its 15 years of existence and continues to advocate for the inclusive right to self-determination of peoples and justpeace in Mindanao.
